As an expert online rowing coach, my approach is built on a foundation of discipline, data, and a clear vision for success. If you’re considering working with me, it’s important to know that my coaching style isn’t for everyone. I work best with athletes who are committed to improvement, willing to embrace structured, data-driven training, and who understand that success in rowing—whether on the water or on the erg—comes from consistency, accountability, and a long-term vision.
If you’re looking for someone to provide an expert-level training program tailored to your specific needs, while also expecting you to track, reflect, and execute at a high level, then we’re likely a great fit. However, if you struggle with consistency, aren’t interested in logging your training data, or want a more casual approach, then my coaching philosophy may not align with your expectations.
Who Thrives in My Coaching Program?

1. Athletes with a Vision
I work best with rowers who have a clear sense of what they want to achieve. Whether your goal is to race at the World Indoor Rowing Championships, win a local regatta, improve your personal best, or simply maximize your fitness, you need to have a purpose that drives your training. Coaching isn’t just about prescribing workouts—it’s about aligning training with a greater objective. When you have a strong “why,” the “how” becomes much easier to execute.
If you’re someone who wants to row faster but hasn’t taken the time to define what success looks like, I can help you clarify that. However, if you just want to “exercise” without a goal, my coaching style may not be the right fit for you.
2. Disciplined and Consistent Rowers
Rowing is a sport that rewards those who show up—day after day, week after week. Training isn’t about a single great session; it’s about stacking weeks and months of effective training together to create long-term progress. The athletes who get the best results from my coaching are those who commit to following the program as written, rather than skipping workouts or cherry-picking sessions.
I understand that life can get in the way sometimes, and I always work with my athletes to adjust their training when needed. However, if you frequently miss sessions, don’t communicate, or don’t make training a priority, you won’t get the most out of working with me.
3. Data-Driven Athletes
One of the biggest differentiators in my coaching approach is that I rely on training data to make informed decisions about programming. I expect my athletes to track their workouts, log their training data, and analyze their performance.
This means using the Concept2 Logbook, heart rate data, power output, stroke rate, and other key performance indicators to guide training adjustments. If you’re someone who doesn’t like to track their numbers or isn’t willing to log training data, then my coaching probably isn’t a great fit for you. I don’t rely on guesswork—I use data to refine your training so that every stroke you take serves a purpose.

4. Athletes Who Take Ownership of Their Training
The best athletes I coach take an active role in their own development. They ask questions, reflect on their progress, and engage in the process. Coaching isn’t about blindly following a plan—it’s about understanding why you’re doing what you’re doing. I encourage all my athletes to be curious, ask about the rationale behind training strategies, and take responsibility for their growth.
I don’t work well with athletes who expect a coach to “fix” them without putting in the effort themselves. If you’re willing to take ownership, communicate honestly about your training, and be proactive in making adjustments when needed, you’ll thrive in my system.
Who May Not Be a Good Fit?
1. Casual Exercisers Who Just Want a Workout Plan
If you’re looking for a simple workout plan without a structured long-term approach, my coaching isn’t the best option. My programs are designed for athletes who want to make meaningful progress over time, not just follow a generic fitness routine.
There’s nothing wrong with rowing for general fitness, but my expertise is in performance-based coaching. If you just want to row occasionally for fun without following a structured plan, there are other coaching options that might suit you better.
2. Athletes Who Aren’t Willing to Log Their Training
I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: If you don’t log your training, I can’t coach you effectively. Data is what allows me to tailor your program, make adjustments, and help you break through performance plateaus.
Failing to log training means I can’t see patterns in your performance, fatigue levels, or training load. Without this information, coaching turns into guesswork, and that’s not how I operate. If you aren’t willing to take the time to track your training, then my coaching style isn’t going to be the right fit for you.
3. Rowers Who Lack Consistency
I believe that every athlete should train with purpose. If you often find yourself making excuses, skipping sessions, or failing to prioritize training, then working with me isn’t going to be effective. I can create the best plan in the world, but if it’s not followed, it won’t yield results.
Athletes who thrive under my coaching are those who commit to the process, even on the tough days. They don’t just train when they feel like it—they train because they are driven by their goals.
4. Athletes Who Expect Quick Fixes
Progress in rowing doesn’t happen overnight. My coaching is focused on long-term development, not shortcuts. If you’re looking for a quick fix or a rapid improvement in a matter of weeks, you’ll be disappointed. The athletes who get the best results are those who commit to steady, incremental progress over months and years.
I provide the roadmap, but it’s up to you to execute consistently. If you embrace the process, you’ll see real, sustainable improvement.
