Rowing Coach – Neil Bergenroth – About Me

Educator, App Developer, and Rowing Coach – Neil Bergenroth

I am an experienced rowing coach with over 34 years of experience. As a trusted leader and technology innovator in the rowing community, I know that caring for the clients and athletes I work with is essential for growth and performance.

I have been involved with rowing for over thirty-four years and have served as a rowing coach for twenty years. I started rowing in the United Kingdom at Kingston Grammar School at 13. During my five years of high school rowing, I won two national championships in the 2- at the age of sixteen and in the school’s head at eighteen. In addition to this success, I earned a place on the Great Britain Junior National team and competed in the 1992 Junior World Rowing Championships in the 2- finishing 9th.

After graduating high school, I attended Boston University and placed 5th at the national championship regatta my freshman year. I was a member of the varsity eight in the 1995, 1996, and 1997 seasons. I was awarded the team M.V.P. in my Sophomore and Senior Years and graduated with a BSc in Human Movement Studies.

Rowing Coach Experience

After graduating, I taught and served as a rowing coach at The Gunnery School, CT. Our crews earned top finishes in the Head of the Charles Regatta and the N.E.I.R.A. regatta.

Following my tenure as a coach in New England, I moved to Tulsa with my wife in the summer of 2002 and became the Head Coach of The Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors (now the Tulsa Youth Rowing Association). Over the next 14 years, I served as the head coach and built the program from 10 athletes, no equipment, and one coach, to 65 athletes, $200K+ equipment, and six coaches. I have coached crews that have been successful at Central District Regional Rowing Championships and Youth Nationals and served on the Central District regatta committee for several years. Many athletes I have had the privilege of working with have continued to compete at the collegiate level.

In the summer of 2013, I led a successful effort to take the first junior crew from Oklahoma to compete in the Thames Cup at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in the U.K.

Additionally, I served as the regatta director for the Route 66 Regatta in 2015 and 2016.

I have competed as a master’s rower, winning many titles. I won the 30-39 age group at the SWEAT indoor ergometer competition for six years.

I have taught high school and middle school science since my coaching and teaching career began. I currently serve on the science faculty at Holland Hall School in Tulsa, OK. In 2015, I was awarded Collins Family Award for Faculty Excellence, and in 2018 the Pauline McFarlin Walter Upper School Master Teacher Chair.

I retired from Head Coach responsibilities in 2016. Since then, I have started a private remote coaching practice (see details here) serving athletes in various parts of the world.

I currently serve as the director of gROW Tulsa, a program of the Tulsa Youth Rowing Association. This program features a RowingSTEM component and aims to provide rowing opportunities for the underserved youth of Tulsa.

I currently teach Chemistry, A.P. Chemistry, and iOS Game Design at the high school level. Additionally, I love to program and have developed four iOS rowing apps, Erg Dude,  RowingSTEM, Remote Rowing Coach, and Erg Math, currently available on the app store. All of my iOS apps are available at this link.
